One of the responsibilities tasked to the University of Georgia (UGA) Office of Security and Emergency Preparedness (OSEP) is to manage resources during large scale disasters that impact the UGA campus. The UGA Emergency Response Team (ERT) is a critical group of campus administrators, state and local key personnel established to assist in the management of resources, equipment and personnel that will be needed to promote a well organized campus response and recovery operation. In addition, the ERT is an important component in the overall UGA Emergency Operations Plan (EOP).
To resolve several issues and misconceptions about how the ERT functions, the team is organized according to emergency support functions defined by the Federal Emergency Management Agency. When a large scale emergency occurs on campus, ERT members will be called based on their area of responsibility and assigned to the incident command structure based on National Incident Management System (NIMS) guidelines as appropriate at that time based on the type of incident.
- The ERT is activated only during large scale events
- The ERT program identifies core team members who must be notified during any large scale event at UGA
- The ERT program designates emergency support team members who are contacted when there is a need for resources or personnel under their purview
- The ERT includes only individuals who have the authority to deploy personnel or resources under their purview
- The ERT includes several Athens-Clarke County, other state agency and University System members who will be contacted during large scale events and who may serve as part of the unified incident command structure (Note: Local EMA directors will also be identified for counties where off-campus facilities exist.)
