RE: Test of the UGAAlert System—September 26, 2007
On Wednesday, September 26th, 2007 at 12:05 p.m., a full test of the UGAAlert emergency notification system will be conducted. This will be the only scheduled test of the system this semester. Periodic tests of the UGAAlert emergency notification system are necessary to evaluate our ability to issue timely emergency messages when immediate action is required. If you have not yet registered and want to participate in this test, please register at http://ugaalert.uga.edu/. Likewise, if you wish to alter your existing UGAAlert preferences, you may change them at the same address.
Based on current subscribers to UGAAlert, the system will be making voice calls and sending e-mails and SMS text messages to more than 37,000 unique numbers and addresses. The system will continue to attempt calls until a successful connection (live or voice mail) is made or a designated period of time elapses. Therefore, we encourage you to answer promptly if possible. The phone number reflected on your caller ID will be 706-542-0111. You are encouraged to program this into your cell phone so you will recognize it as an emergency call in the future. Although the test will commence at 12:05pm, the system will “throttle” calls in an attempt to prevent overload to the telephone and email systems. Consequently, calls may continue for some time after the start of the test. A primary objective of the test is to determine how well the system handles the current volume of calls. After-action reports will enable us to determine the overall connection success rate.
UGAAlert is the University's newest notification system and is intended to supplement other forms of emergency notification including tornado sirens, NOAA weather radios, mass email messages, emergency pagers, public address systems, building-wide announcements, among others. If you have questions before the test—or feedback following the test—please send e-mail to ugaalert@uga.edu or call the Office of Security and Emergency Preparedness at 706.542.5845. We appreciate your assistance and cooperation.
