Outdoor Sirens

Outdoor sirens are activated by Athens/Clarke County only when a tornado warning has been issued for the area. A warning is issued when a tornado has been sighted or indicated by weather radar in the area. You should immediately seek shelter when you hear outdoor weather sirens in Athens.

National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Weather Radio Information

The best way to survive an emergency is to know when it's coming so you can take appropriate action. A National Oceanic and Atmospheric Admininistration (NOAA) Weather Radio is the optimal way to hear watches and warnings from the National Weather Service (NWS) even if they are issued in the middle of the night. NOAA Weather Radios are recommended as standard equipment in every home and public gathering place.

As a part of personal preparedness, the Office of Security and Emergency Preparedness encourages everyone to have a NOAA radio and know how to use it.

When programming your weather radio, use this link "Georgia County Coverage" to find your county's SAME#, NWR Transmitter, Frequency, Call Sign and Watts.

Family Preparedness Plan

The Office of Security & Emergency Preparedness created a Family Preparedness Plan for use by individuals and families. This plan is available for downloading by clicking here. The plan includes: wallet cards, checklists for creating a grab and go emergency kit, financial emergency planning, emergency planning for pets, and several other preparedness tools. The Family Preparedness Plan is designed with blank spaces that the individual can use to fill in the appropriate information to create their emergency plan.

If this plan does not fit your needs, there are other Family Preparedness Plans available.The American Red Cross has several resources to help individuals and families prepare for disasters. Other useful web sites for preparedness planning are ready.gov/ and ready.ga.gov/.

Although college campuses are usually safe places, emergencies and disasters do occur. The University of Georgia takes an “all hazards” approach to planning for various types of emergencies (natural disasters, chemical spills, shootings, etc.) that could impact the campus.
