Emergencies come in all types: weather related, national disasters, natural and man-made, even pandemics. Basic safety precautions and preparedness can be useful for any emergency, even potential incidents on the University of Georgia campus. These safety tips provide basic preparedness ideas and information that would be helpful in the event of an emergency. The University of Georgia has plans in place to deal with disaster/emergency events, but it is the actions of students, faculty and staff that will ultimately determine how much an impact an emergency event would have on the University community.

What can I do to lessen the impact of an emergency event?

  • Know the nearest emergency exits and exit emergency plans for your classroom, dorm or building
  • Know the location of first aid stations/kits and fire alarms in the buildings you frequent
  • Be sure of the correctness of emergency related information you share with others
  • Be aware of your surroundings
  • Report any suspicious persons or activity to the University of Georgia Police Department at (706) 542-2200
  • Have emergency phone numbers and emergency plan nearby
  • Know where to go and what to do in an emergency
  • Share emergency plan information with faculty, staff and other students in your residence hall, classroom, lab or campus building
  • Be alert to official University of Georgia announcements regarding alerts and information (e.g. UGAAlert, TV, radio, websites, scrolling message signs)
  • Keep your emergency contact information up-to-date in UGAAlert (http://www.ugaalert.uga.edu) and program (706) 542-0111 into your caller ID so it will immediately be recognized as an urgernt call from UGAAlert.
  • Get training in first aid and CPR
  • Assemble an emergency kit and have it readily available for an emergency (Link for kit items)
